EU clears Oracle's takeover on Sun

New York: The European Union's (EU) antitrust watchdog has approved the Sun-Oracle transaction last week saying the deal would not restrict competition in the database's market. In April last year, Oracle has agreed to buy Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion or $9.50 a share in cash, reports PTI.

The approval from the EU came after months of investigation. Software major Oracle Corp has completed the takeover of hardware company Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion. The deal, which was announced nine months ago, would transform the IT industry, Oracle said in a statement yesterday. The two companies, which have a significant presence in India, together employs more than 26,000 people in the country. Oracle has more than 25,000 employees in India, while Sun Microsystems has 1,200 people.

The Sun Solaris operating system is the leading platform for the Oracle database, Oracle's largest business. With the acquisition of Sun, Oracle can optimise Oracle database for some of the unique, high-end features of Solaris.

Nokia research centre has displayed a mobile radar concept in a cellphone at an exhibition in Finland's capital Helsinki, which can measure speed, sense and movement, even when the device is covered by a piece of cloth.

The company stated that the device will also measure the direction of movement of an approaching object and does so using electromagnetic waves, just like real radar. According to the blog posted on Electronista, applications for the technology, as the Nokia staffer demonstrates in the video below, could involve gesture control, with a simple raise of the hand upping the volume of music playback, with the reverse movement lowering music volumes. The feature could also be used at sporting events to determine a pitched ball's or a race car's speed.

20 Years Indian unveils Portable Operating System

The 20-year old engineering student Niket Chandrashekar from New Horizon College in Bangalore, has developed a portable Operating System (OS) that can be stored and operated on any device. This has been developed almost entirely with open source tools and with Wine, which allows any Windows-based applications to run on other operating systems, reports Deccan Herald.

LinuXP, developed on the Linux kernel and tuned up to support Windows XP, Vista and 7, is shown to be useful in performing certain tasks such as recovering lost files, locating and installing drivers for printers and other connected devices. It also lets users carry their work on pen drives/cell phones to be ported and extracted through a laptop and work.

"I was thinking of creating a smaller programme that can work like an OS while studying certain innate limitations of the existing operating systems," said Chandrashekar. Also, the software developed by Chandrashekar, has a folder locking feature which not only protects the folder but also hides it from view. The student, who released similar software that works with XP some months ago, has plans to put the software online to let everyone use it.

"Since the whole of this software - with whatever work one has done on it - can be saved in portable storage devices without changes to the format or design, you can retrieve them on any laptop or desktop without having to worry about things like formatting," Chandrashekar said and added, "Also, even while used on someone's device, you can make sure the data it carries is safe."

Chandrashekar said there is no licensing or IP concerns in using the software. "It took about seven months for me to develop this software, which can step in and perform the tasks of an OS, in case the system does not have one and contains important files," he said, while demonstrating the software. He also said that the college management and teachers of his department were helpful in his effort to develop the software.

Jeans & T-shirt to charge Cell Phones

Stanford University researchers have been trying to find out a way to charge cellphone batteries with the help of electronic textiles. They have managed to convert regular cotton and polyester into electronic textile which can make jeans and T-shirt that can charge cellphones. The technology is also one of the first steps to a new category of devices with flexible screens that are worked into clothes, according to Electronista.

In earlier experiments, Stanford scientists used what could be called ink, made up of single-walled carbon nanotubes, which are electrically conductive carbon fibers less than 1/50,000th the thickness of a human hair. So far, electronic devices have been patched onto existing fabric rather than engineered and embedded into the material.

This coating allows the fibers to conduct electricity, turning them into porous conductors. With a large surface area, a large amount of energy can be stored. At the same time, the charged clothing can theoretically withstand as many as one million full recharge cycles. The textiles also retain flexibility and stretchability of regular cotton and polyester, and retain their electronic properties even after being laundered multiple times.

ISHIFT TEchnology in VOLVO buses

Volvo I-Shift is a 12-speed manual gearbox with an automated gearchanging system. Volvo I-Shift is designed for tourist, intercity, regional and route buses - offering high driving and ride comfort and excellent fuel economy. An optimised Volvo I-Shift system is also under development for Volvo's hybrid buses.

Volvo I-Shift is a fast-acting gearchanging system with brief interruptions in torque and a wide ratio span, resulting in ample resources for high average speeds. The gear lever is integrated into the driver's seat and gear-changes are entirely automatic. The starting gear is selected automatically according to the road's gradient and vehicle load.

Volvo I-Shift is available with a choice of several different gear-shifting programs, including a function that allows a choice

between fully-automatic gearchanges and manual gear selection featuring a performance program with kickdown function that utilises the engine's capacity to the maximum. No cluth pedal is needed as the gearchanging software senses the need for gearchange in order to remain optimum performance.

The gearbox is compact and lightweight. Long oil-change intervals mean low operating costs and less environmental imprint impact. If special oil is used, oil and filter changes can take place as far apart as once every 400,000 km or every three years.
